UK: Sentencing for cannabis granny

Southern FM

Wednesday 07 Mar 2007

A grandmother must carry out 250 hours' unpaid work after being found
guilty of growing and possessing cannabis.

Prior to sentencing, 68-year-old Patricia Tabram said she was not afraid
of going to jail saying: "I will be everybody's granny in there".
Police found four plants growing in her wardrobe at her home in
Northumberland in 2005 after a tip-off.

She was in breach of a six-month suspended sentence after she was
earlier convicted of possession with intent to supply when cannabis
cakes were found in her home. Tabram, who defended herself, earlier
sent Carlisle Crown Court into chaos after she revealed a cannabis stash
she took into court hidden in her bra had gone missing. She told Judge
Barbara Forrester she wanted to use it as evidence and it had been
stolen. It later turned up in her handbag.

Tabram told the court she took cannabis to treat her depression, but the
judge told the jury that medical necessity was not a legal defence
saying the allegations were "very straightforward". At the prospect of
going to prison, Tabram said before the verdict: "I will be with all
women in there and they will treat me like a queen. I will be everyone's
granny in there."

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Patricia Tabram has consistently
flouted the law and Northumbria Police has a duty to act on the
information we receive concerning possessing and cultivating drugs in
order to enforce this law. "We take drug abuse very seriously and are
keen to use all tools at our disposal to eliminate drug dealing and use
in the community."
