UK: Cannabis granny guilty
News and Star, Carlisle
Wednesday 07 Mar 2007 A 68-YEAR-OLD grandmother has today been found guilty of growing cannabis plants in her walk-in wardrobe. Jurors at Carlisle Crown Court took just 15 minutes to find Pat Tabram guilty of cultivating cannabis plants and possessing the drug. She may now be sentenced by a judge this afternoon. Tabram who lives at Humshaugh, near Hexham, told the court yesterday that she had suffered 27 years of pain, sleeplessness and other problems caused by drugs prescribed to her by doctors after the sudden death of her teenage son. It was only after a chance meeting with a young couple who gave her a cannabis cigarette that she discovered that the illegal drug was the answer, she said. “Within five minutes I was sound asleep, snoring my head off,” she said. She said she slept for six hours - and awoke “feeling great”. After using cannabis again, she said, she slept for more than 12 hours for the first time in years. “The top and bottom of it is that I discovered the medicinal value of cannabis,” she said. “I don’t have any illnesses now. I simply use cannabis as medication and it works.” The cultivation and possession offences took place on September 16, 2005. Earlier, prosecuting counsel Tom Moran told the court that Tabram, who conducted her own defence, was a passionate believer in the right of people to use cannabis for the relief of pain when conventional medicine had not proved effective. However, the law did not allow that, so Tabram did not have a legitimate defence to the case against her, he said. http://www.newsandstar.co.uk/news/viewarticle.aspx?id=473862
