UK: Cannabis Gran sentenced
Hexham Courant
Friday 09 Mar 2007 HUMSHAUGH pensioner Patricia Tabram has vowed to continue flouting drug laws after being found guilty of growing cannabis in her home. On Wednesday, the self-styled “Cannabis Gran” was given a 250-hour community service order at Carlisle Crown Court after a three-day trial during which she was found her guilty of possessing and cultivating the drug. She had denied the charges against her. Yesterday, Tabram went on national TV and radio programmes saying she would continue to use the drug which she claimed helped her combat depression. The court was told cannabis plants were found growing in a walk-in wardrobe at the 68-year-old’s home in East Lea, Humshaugh, in September 2005. Earlier that year she was give a six-month suspended sentence on cannabis-related charges. But the judge at Carlisle Crown Court decided not to invoke the suspended sentence. Following the conviction, a Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Patricia Tabram has consistently flouted the law and Northumbria Police have a duty to act on the information they receive concerning possessing and cultivating drugs in order to enforce this law. “We take drug abuse very seriously and are keen to use all tools at our disposal to eliminate drug dealing and use in the community.” The Crown Prosecution Service said medicinal use of cannabis was not a legal defence to possession and cultivation of the drug. Tabram conducted her own defence at the trial. http://www.hexham-courant.co.uk -- LCA on Myspace; http://www.myspace.com/cannabis_people_uk
