Hanoi - Police in Vietnam made the largest drug bust in their history, arresting four Chinese men and an Indonesian accused of smuggling up to 8.8 metric tons of hashish worth about 90 million dollars, a police official said Thursday.

The five were arrested Monday after police discovered the hashish, or marijuana resin, inside two shipping containers in the town of Mong Cai near the Chinese border, said Nguyen Anh Tuan, head of the Ministry of Public Security's Anti-Narcotics Department.

"This is the largest amount of drugs we have ever discovered," Tuan said.

He said shipping documents for the containers, imported from Pakistan and on their way to China, had listed their contents as jeans.

The five men entered Vietnam on May 10 and are believed to be the owners of the drugs, the police official said.

"The drug is packed in small bags of 1.1 kilograms and 2.2 kilograms," Tuan said.

Vietnam reported 76,443 drug crime cases from 2001 to 2007, arresting 119,286 people and seizing 1.28 tons of heroin, 1.77 tons of opium and 800,000 drug tablets, according to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security

Trafficking 5 kilograms or more of marijuana resin is punishable by death in Vietnam. The country sentenced at least 85 people to death for drug crimes in 2007. So far this year, nine people have been sentenced to death for drug offenses. (dpa)
