Ghana: Farmer remanded for possessing 29 wrappers of cannabis

Modern Ghana

Monday 26 May 2008

The Akim Oda Magistrates’ Court in the Birim Central Municipality on Friday, remanded into police custody, Padmore Kwame Fosuhene, a farmer, for possessing 29 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis (wee).

The prosecution prayed the court for a long adjournment to enable get directions from the Attorney General's Department.

Accordingly, the court presided over by Mr Albert Annor, who did not take the plea of the accused, fixed the next sitting to July 31.

The prosecution said the complainants in the case are police personnel from Akim Swedru and Akim Achiase and that on May 20, this year at about 13.30 hours, policemen from the Achiase station had a tip off that armed robbers had attacked Dukom, a village near Achiase.

That, the Achiase Police also informed the Swedru station who also dispatched a team of personnel to join them to Dukom, but after failing to trace the armed robbers, the police team decided to return through Akim Aperade.

In the town, the team had information that Fosuhene was dealing in narcotic drugs. The police therefore went to the accused person's house, confronted and arrested him.

When a search was conducted on him and his room, 29 wrappers of dried leaves, suspected to be cannabis (hemp plant) were found in the pocket of his Jean shorts.

Fosuhene, who claimed ownership of the drug, said he purchased the stuff from Akim Oda old town.
