Letter: Legalise, regulate and control supply of cannabis

Steve Clements

York Press

Monday 26 May 2008

OH dear me, here we go again. DCS Steve Read reinvents The Gateway Theory in his new drive to stamp out "killer skunk".

The 23 experts in drug use on the advisory council (pharmacologists, psychiatrists, doctors and indeed senior police chiefs) concluded it did not consider the risk of progression of Class A drugs as a consequence of using cannabis to be substantial: and that such risks are likely to be less than those associated with tobacco or alcohol.

Skunk cannabis was first grown in the US during the 1970s and formed the basis of the cannabis available in Dutch coffee shops.

It was certainly available in the UK 25 years ago. It is not new and it is not particularly stronger now than it was then. Drug policy should be based on facts, not on myth, prejudice and half-truths.

The Advisory Council also concluded that cannabis did not result in antisocial behaviour, it was not a cause of acquisitive crime, it did not lead to violence, and that there was no real evidence to show that it was a cause of mental illness.

If we want cannabis off the streets, then legalise it and control and regulate its sale properly. It is not the job of the police to enforce a healthcare regime on adults who can make their own choices.

As for Colin Henson's letter (The Press, May 19) maybe he could explain how, in Holland, where cannabis has been decriminalised for 30 years, they have one of the lowest useage rates in Europe, they have not seen a rise in heroin use for 20 years, there are no psychotic murderers on killer skunk, and they were voted the best place in Europe to bring up children?
