Cannabis (Cannabis sativa) is one of the most ancient cultivated plant that has been grown for centuries for enduring fibres and seeds rich with oils. Entrepreneurs and establishers of Perfect Plant OÜ Tarmo Tael and Ago Siiner were charmed by the variable uses of the plant as well as it’s suitability with today’s principles of saving and effective usage, writes aripaev.ee.

The purpose of these two young men is to renew the tradition of growing cannabis in Estonia and creating conditions to allow the processing of it, writes Meie Maa. According to the leaders of the project, Europe already has a network of people growing and processing cannabis – European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) – and starting from the year 2007, the two men have been members of the association. They are optimistic about cultivating cannabis, saying: “If we weren’t, we wouldn’t do it.” They have been actively developing the idea for four years already.

Currently, there is hemp growing on 160 ha in Estonia, most of it in order to get the seeds, and 10 ha is being used as an experiment area to get fibre. The appropriate area has increased by a little bit when compared to the previous year. Estonia’s largest hemp cultivator Kruusamägi has also increased the land-area he grows cannabis on, even if last years result in economy was zero. According to advisor Veeve Kaasik, a zero in the first year is a normal outcome.

In Saare County, hemp is currently being grown on 9 ha by two manufacturers – one organic and one normal producer. The market price of the seeds is ca EEK 7,000 per ton, for seeds grown organically ca EEK 10,000. According to Tael and Siiner, the price of hemp on world market is rising, mainly due to increasing demand. Similarly, more cannabis is grown every year.

Kaasik estimates that cannabis should be cultivated by ourselves, rather than buying it in. “We have people who have the experience, so we should have enough seeds. I’ve been working as a field inspector and seed grower for years myself, and I’m interested in having the seeds reproduced in Estonia. We need to bring in a sort that could be reproduced locally. Finola should be suitable for our conditions.”
