Fiji: Drug user gets jail time Nansie Volau Fiji Daily Post Monday 28 Jul 2008 The Suva High Court imposed the custodial sentence after presiding judge Justice Daniel Goundar found that 25-year-old Maikeli Seru had not changed his ways. Justice Goundar said the office was serious and a custodial sentence was necessary. Seru was drinking liquor in a public place when he was arrested by police officers. He was taken to the Nausori Police Station where he was searched and police found 16 sachets of dried leaves wrapped in aluminum foil under the sleeves of his t-shirt. The leaves, weighing a total of 8.2 grams, were later confirmed to be cannabis or marijuana as it is commonly known. Seru told police that the leaves were for his personal use and he was not dealing in drugs. In mitigation, the accused said he was a farmer and married with a young child. He also told the court that his parents separated when he was a child. In sentencing Seru, the court took in to account his guilty plea and that his wife and child were solely dependent on him. Justice Goundar said that Seru had other previous related convictions and had not shown any signs of reform. “This is not the first time you have been found in possession of illicit drugs,” he told Seru. “You have been given too many opportunities to reform yourself but you have not made use of them,” Justice Goundar added. http://fijidailypost.com/
