Czech: Judge releases cannabis grower "unaware of crime
Prague Daily Monitor Friday 15 Aug 2008 Plzen, West Bohemia, Aug 14 (CTK) - A Czech judge has released an Asian national, whom the police caught working at an illegal cannabis farm in June, from custody saying that he had been unaware of the job being unlawful and that there is no reason to keep him in prison, the daily Pravo wrote Thursday. The state attorney, on her part, wanted the 27-year-old suspect to remain in custody so that he cannot evade prosecution. However, he is at liberty now, and he has disappeared. The authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest, the daily writes. The Asian supervised the cannabis farm in Chotesov near Plzen for more than half a year. His monthly pay was $1,000, most of which he sent to his family back in his homeland, Pravo continues. To explain his release from custody, the judge described the situation the man had found himself in the Czech Republic. He paid a large sum to an agency that was to secure a job and accommodation for him, but failed to do so, leaving him in the state of emergency. "When he accepted the job [of cannabis grower], he was definitely unaware that he would commit a crime thereby. He used the opportunity to gain accommodation and regular income," the judge argued. She challenged the state attorney's apprehensions that the man could resume his criminal activities, if released. According to the state attorney, it ensues from the pieces of evidence that the foreigner is not so naive a person who would not have a clue what growing cannabis means. "He knew well that he was committing a crime," the state attorney is quoted as saying. http://www.praguemonitor.com/en/401/czech_national_news/26833/
