Campaigners rally in Chelmsford to legalise cannabis

CANNABIS smokers brought their campaign to legalise the Class C drug to Chelmsford.

Around 25 members of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance set up camp in Central Park, off Parkway, on Sunday to highlight their plight with a so-called Smokey Bear's Picnic.

As well as erecting a gazebo bearing the alliance's logo, the group paraded around the north-western corner of the park waiving flags bearing the signature cannabis leaf.

Police stood guard throughout the afternoon but despite threats to light up there were no drugs in sight and the demonstration remained peaceful.

A 19-year-old user from Chelmsford, who asked not to be named, explained why he believes the law should be changed.

He said: "It is just completely out of order that cannabis is illegal. How can the Government justify sending old ladies to prison for using cannabis to help them sleep at night?"

The teenager, who has one caution for possession of the drug, said he was not concerned about the police presence.

Don Barnard, 66, of Witham, has been fighting to have cannabis legalised since the 1970s.

He said: "We are bringing information about the subject to the general public, this is just the start."

On September 28 there will be two more protests staged in Chelmsford borough to mark Green Day – smokers will gather at Danbury Common and at Compass Gardens, South Woodham Ferrers.

Don added: "It is to bemoan or celebrate the 80th anniversary of cannabis becoming illegal in the UK. I can guarantee we will be smoking there. We want to discourage people from hiding away. Everybody does it – we want to bring it out in the open."
