Cocaine crazed Brits' heart attack warning

In The Mix

Tuesday 25 Nov 2008

A new study of British people’s attitudes towards drugs has revealed that amongst people considering sampling an illegal drug, three times as many are thinking about cocaine compared to cannabis. 32% of potential drug users polled in the Observer newspaper’s latest poll of over 1,000 adults said they were contemplating cocaine compared to 12% cannabis, despite the increasingly well documented health risks associated with using the class A drug.

Heart attack specialist Dr Chris Baker told the newspaper increasing numbers of people are developing ‘furring’ arteries even from ‘one-off’ episodes. “When I see a young patient with a heart attack, one of the first things I think of is cocaine,” the doctor said. “If you’re in your twenties or thirties and you come in with a heart attack, I’ll ask you: ‘Have you been doing coke?’ And I’ll probably dipstick your urine to find out. I’ll probably even consider it if you’re in your forties,” he added.

Britain’s Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA), meanwhile, took the relatively unusual step of lending their full support to the West Yorkshire constabulary recently after the police force issued a warning of cannabis being cut with crack cocaine. ”In this serious situation, we are in agreement with West Yorkshire Police’s warning on the contamination of cannabis,” the LCA confirmed. “Which may be the first step towards a new agenda that relates harm reduction and human rights – it is to be applauded as essential,” they added.
