Malaysian court sentences Indonesians to hang for drug trafficking

Earth Times

Tuesday 30 Jun 2009

Kuala Lumpur - Malaysia's high court sentenced two Indonesians to death by hanging after they were caught carrying 53 kilograms of cannabis in the boot of their car two years ago, a news report said Wednesday. The two men, aged 28 and 30, were found guilty of drug trafficking, which carries the mandatory death sentence under the country's tough laws.

"Only one punishment is given for this crime, so the both of you will be hanged," the high court judge was quoted as saying by the Malay-language Berita Harian daily.

The duo, who come from Indonesia's Aceh province, had failed to stop their car when asked by police in September 2007.

Following a high-speed chase, the Indonesians' car crashed and both men ran out of their vehicle and dived into a nearby river. However, police managed to arrest them shortly after.

Despite Malaysia's tough drug laws, drug trafficking and addiction has been on the rise in recent years.
