Malaysia: Thai housewife held for trafficking cannabis

The Star, Malaysia

Tuesday 25 Oct 2011

ALOR SETAR: A Thai housewife was arrested for smuggling 20 slabs of substance, believed to be cannabis with a street value of RM44,700, into the country in an express bus.

A Customs enforcement team, acting on a tip-off, stopped the bus at the Jitra toll plaza at about 9.10pm last Thursday.

Kedah Customs Department director Saidi Ismail said the team found the substance weighing 18.634kg in the luggage of the 28-year-old suspect.

“Initial investigations showed that the woman was hired to smuggle in the drugs,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Saidi said the bus, with 25 passengers, was heading to Johor Baru from Thailand.

He said the drugs were believed to be for the Klang Valley and Johor Baru markets.

He said the woman had been remanded for a week and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty upon conviction.
