Netherlands: Coffeeshops in south Netherlands closed to foreigners
Radio Netherlands Worldwide Tuesday 01 May 2012 Customers who want to buy cannabis must submit proof of residency to obtain a special pass. This is the first phase of the government's new, much stricter cannabis policy. There is widespread opposition against the new policy. Coffeeshops in Limburg's provincial capital Maastricht have announced they are going to sell cannabis to foreigners and non-members to provoke a test case. A number of foreign customers have said they will file a discrimination complaint with the police if they are denied service.
