US: First American states vote to legalise cannabis and gay marriage
The Mirror Wednesday 07 Nov 2012 Voters in the US made history today when two states approved gay marriage while another two legalised recreational marijuana use. Approval for same-sex marriage first in Maine and then Maryland broke a 14-year streak when voters in 32 states had knocked back the idea. Gay marriage is already legal in six states and Washington, D.C. but via legislation, not by a vote of the people. The vote in favour of cannabis in Washington and Colorado sets up a showdown with the federal government, which outlaws the drug. The measure establishes a system of state-licensed marijuana growers, processors and retailers, where adults over 21 can buy up to an ounce. It also establishes a standard blood test limit for driving under the influence. Estimates have shown that pot taxes could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Separately, medical marijuana measures were on the ballot in three other states while 17 other states already have such laws on their books In California, voters were deciding whether to repeal the state's death penalty. If the measure prevailed, the more than 720 inmates on death row there would have their sentences converted to life in prison. 17 states have already ended capital punishment, though most have done so through legislation. In all, there were 176 measures on the ballots in 38 states. http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/us-election-first-american-states-vote-1422056
