US: Arkansas Voters Reject Medical Marijuana

Mike Hughes

Wednesday 07 Nov 2012

Arkansas had the opportunity to become the first Southern state to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes on Election Day. Unfortunately, the initiative fell short and has been announced as defeated by a margin of 52% to 48%.

While the vote on the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act remained close for much of the night, the margin is wide enough and the number of precincts reporting great enough to announce its defeat.

If approved the initiative would have allowed Arkansas residents access to medical marijuana to treat symptoms of serious debilitating conditions. It also would have created a regulated not-for-profit dispensary to provide medicine to qualified patients.

The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act had a rocky road to the ballot and it became necessary for the state Supreme Court to reject a lawsuit in October from a group called the Coalition to Preserve Arkansas Values to place the initiative on the ballot.

Earlier this evening, Massachusetts approved Question 3 to become the 18th medical cannabis state.
