Dubai: Manager, salesman jailed fouryears for possessing cannabis Manager claimed he possessed 1.2kg cannabis for consumption Bassam Za’za’ Gulf News Sunday 03 Mar 2013 A manager and a salesman have been jailed for four years each for possessing different weights of cannabis in the form of grass-like substance for their personal usage. The Greek manager earlier denied the accusation of possessing 1.2 kilograms of cannabis for promotional purposes contending that he possessed the banned substance for his own consumption. Meanwhile his partner in crime, the Sudanese salesman confessed to possessing 23 grams of the same drug for his own usage. The Dubai Court of First Instance’s presiding judge Ali Atiyyah Saad said the accused will be deported following the completion of their punishments. Prosecutors said the manager, J.D., possessed 308 plastic bags, a plastic box and a paper fold that contained different forms of cannabis with the intention to promote them amongst others. Drugs prosecution accused the salesman, E.M., with possessing cannabis in the form of dried grassy substance for consumption purposes. J.D. and E.M. were also accused of possessing and consuming drugs. “I possessed drugs for consumption purposes and not for promotion,” said J.D. when he defended himself in court. “I consumed drugs but upon a doctor’s prescription,” claimed E.M. who provided the court with a medical prescription. Prosecutors said the Greek possessed cannabis for promotional purposes. He was also accused of possessing Diazepam capsules and consuming Naphthoylindole drug. The Sudanese was charged with possessing three Clonazepam capsules and seven Diazepam capsules and consuming Naphthoylindole, Nordazepam and Oxazepam. An Emirati anti-narcotics police lieutenant said the defendants were arrested in their hotel room in Tecom following a tip off from an informant. “We found Spice drug and different kinds of drug capsules in their possession. A third suspect, who seemed drugged, was present with them in the room. The third suspect admitted that he consumed Spice one hour before the raid. While we were searching the room and questioning the defendants, a fourth suspect, M.R., arrived at the room. M.R. said he came to buy Spice from J.D. Ten minutes later; a suspect called A. came to see his friends [J.D. and E.M.]. A. took out a black sack from his pocket and claimed that it contained Spice which he obtained from J.D.,” claimed the lieutenant. Records said the anti-narcotics police searched J.D.’s dormitory and found dozens of bags of Spice. Police seized different forms of banned substances and in different weights.
