UK: Protestors call for drug's legalisation (Berkshire)

Reading Chronicle

Friday 13 Sep 2013

SPIRITS were high when more than 150 people took part in a protest calling for cannabis to be legalised.

The group gathered in King’s Meadow, Reading, on Saturday [7] and Clark French 27, founder of the Berkshire Cannabis Community and Medical Director of NORML UK, said: “It’s been good apart from having the police presence earlier. I think they took about £100 worth of cannabis off people.

“We expected more people but the police might have put some off because they don’t want to take the risk of getting into trouble, but the point of today is to bring like-minded people together and to try and build bridges between each other.”

The protest was entirely peaceful and the group also listened to music and played games.

Protester Oliver Norton, 23, from West Reading, said: “It would fix a lot of our problems if it was legal and the Government was taxing it. If they were able to open coffee shops it would be a very big boost to the economy.

“There’s no reason why people should be branded criminals for it.”

Greg De Hoedt, from Cannabis Cure UK, said he uses the plant to help him deal with Crohn’s Disease, and added other people suffering with illnesses such as MS also benefit from using it.

He said: “I’ve used so many prescription drugs and none is as effective as cannabis - it allows me to live a normal life and I can function as a normal human being.

“At the moment I get stigmatised and criminalised and that’s the same for everyone.”

Mr De Hoedt said he thinks if the drug was legalised, it would reduce the amount of drug dealing linked to big organised crime groups
