UK: 'No arrests and no searches' at cannabis protest event

Police were monitoring a group of protesters who staged an event in Guildford at the weekend.

No arrests were made on Saturday (September 14) during a protest held in Guildford in support of the legalisation of cannabis.

A small group of protesters, some of them smoking cannabis, assembled at Stoke Park, and organisers suggested that bad weather may have put many off from attending.

Alan Pavia, from the Surrey Cannabis Club, said he spoke to Surrey Police's neighbourhood commander, Inspector Amy Buffoni, before the event.

"She just reiterated that if there was any blatant illegal activity, it will be dealt with," he said.

"We've had 50 or 60 people throughout the day. We've also been engaging with the local council.

"They were fine with us holding a protest here and we were allowed to bring a table but no gazebo or banners.

"It's in the Guildford bylaws. They allowed us to have some music as well.

"We've had a fair bit of interest from a few passers and we've been engaging with people on the topics.

"The police popped in initially in a car and then the local beat officer and a community support officer came and had a chat. They left just before 4.20."

Mr Pavia, 35, addressed protesters and said he was pleased that passers-by were willing to discuss the issues.

"It's difficult to have this open discussion somewhere that is so conservative. I thought we would have a lot more of a negative response but actually the residents have been very respectful of what we were doing and a lot have shown interest. We've had good interaction," he said.

"We acknowledge that there are harms and risks associated with cannabis but we say the harms of prohibition are greater."

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "Officers from Surrey Police's Safer Neighbourhood Team attended a planned protest in Stoke Park at the weekend by the Surrey Cannabis Club.

"The event passed without incident, with no arrests and no searches required.

"Officers attended Saturday's event to ensure the safety of the general public and distributed literature and stickers to all those in attendance."
