UK: Cannabis Club to hold Protest Picnic at Stoke Park Rich Lee TG2 Surrey Tuesday 10 Sep 2013 tg2 surrey community soapbox surrey cannabis club protestDubbed the ‘Stoke Park Smoke-Up’, the event is being organised by Surrey Cannabis Club, an official member of the UK Cannabis Social Clubs, an online community and social group that promotes cannabis for its medicinal, recreational and economic values and who also raise awareness of current UK legislation that criminalises the use of cannabis. “The purpose of this event is to provide an open forum that anyone can attend, users and non-users, to discuss the issues surrounding cannabis,” Alan Pavia of the Surrey Cannabis Club told us. “We want to raise awareness of the harm prohibition is causing, how it affects every single member of society, every taxpayer, and the cost to the tax payer and how, if cannabis was regulated, it would help towards solving the UK’s economic crisis. Regulation would also mean that underage consumers won’t be able to get hold of cannabis, and be withheld from people with mental health problems. “We want to raise awareness of the harm prohibition is causing, how it affects every single member of society" “We also want to highlight the hypocrisy of the current UK legislation and the unlawful restriction of the medical benefits of cannabis to patients that need it. These are just some of the arguments that we really need to get into the public consciousness and be debating these. All the media concentrate on is that cannabis is a ‘mind-bending, mind-altering, psychosis-inducing dangerous drug’ which is refuted by medical experts. “At the event, we’ll have speakers such as Greg deHoedt, president of the UK Cannabis Social Club and Clark French, a medical cannabis user who has MS and has been interviewed on the subject on television. We expect to see a lot of members of the cannabis community, to put a face to it and to grow it. There is a large community of people who use cannabis but many stay underground purely because of the stigma and taboo of cannabis and because it’s illegal.” Surrey Police say they are aware of the planned protest. Officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team will be attending the event on Saturday to ensure the safety of the general public and will deal robustly and appropriately with anyone caught breaking the law. Borough Commander Inspector Amy Buffoni says: “Whilst everyone has the right to make a peaceful protest Surrey Police will not tolerate the use of illegal drugs. I have seen the damage caused by the supply, sale and use of Class B drugs within our communities and will persevere with activities to sweep the streets of Surrey clean of drugs.” http://www.theguide2surrey.com/Community/Community-Soap-Box/September-2013/Cannabis-Club-to-hold-Protest-Picnic-at-Stoke-Park/
