UK: Call for drug law change at park meeting

Essex County Standard

Friday 27 Sep 2013

PRO-CANNABIS campaigners met up in a Chelmsford park to voice their calls for drug laws in Britain to change.

The Essex Cannabis Community held an autumn gathering under a railway viaduct in Central Park, on Saturday, to openly discuss their views on current legislation surrounding drug taking.

Dozens of people, who believe the laws should be changed to legalise the Class B drug, turned out during the gathering, which ran from 1pm to 6pm.

Campaigners spoke with passers-by about the drug and why they feel the Government is wrong to ban it.

Danny Kelly, a co-founder of the Essex Cannabis Community and organiser of the event, said he was pleased with how Saturday went.

He added: “The purpose of the event was to speak with people who do not smoke cannabis and give them information about what smoking the drug can do.

“It is about raising awareness of the medicinal uses of cannabis which can help conditions such as Crohn’s Disease or ADHD.

“Personally, I’d like the Government to give legalising it a go on a trial basis for medicinal use and see if that has a positive effect.

“I am pleased with the number of people on our side of the argument who have come out today and we will certainly look at holding similar events like this in the future, perhaps on a monthly basis.”

Another campaigner, who wished to be known as Bernie Smith, said smoking cannabis has helped him through medical problems and believes others should use it.

He added: “I have been using cannabis for about eight years for my muscle spasms and pain relief after I was in a car accident.

“Without the drug I would not be standing here today without the assistance of a mobility scooter and I know there are millions of people suffering needlessly because of current cannabis laws.

“Alcohol, painkillers and tobacco are more harmful and I think all the arguments about side effects of cannabis are flawed.”
