UK: Plans for 'cannabis cafe' go up in smoke - for now

Colin Davies had wanted to open his ‘cannabis social club’ on Tariff Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter next month.

Plans for a ‘cannabis social club’ in Manchester have gone up in smoke, says a drugs campaigner.

Colin Davies, 56, says he has abandoned his plan ‘for now’ following recent talks with police.

He had wanted to open his ‘cannabis social club’ on Tariff Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter next month.

Initially he said cannabis would be smoked at the premises although he insisted the drug would not be traded.

Later he claimed cannabis would not be smoked but that it would merely be a meeting place for ‘like-minded people’. Instead of his cannabis social club, Mr Davies said he still plans to open a regular cafe at the same venue.

Mr Davies, who was once jailed for drug trafficking and infamously handed a bouquet of flowers containing cannabis to the Queen, met senior officers at Bootle Street police station on Monday morning.

He was accompanied by the north west Euro MP Chris Davies, a long-time supporter.

Officers told Mr Davies they were steadfastly opposed to the cafe, insisting it would attract criminality.

Possession and supply of cannabis remain against the law despite long-standing campaigns to legalise the drug.

Now Mr Davies, from Romiley, Stockport, says he wants to hold a rally in Manchester to urge the government to make the drug legal.

He said: “Medical and social users of cannabis are being treated as a criminal group, like a band of thieves.

“Cannabis has been stigmatised by these laws for too long.

“It has to stop.

“The time has come to put an end to this stupid law that prohibits people from using a plant that can cure cancer and a multiplicity of conditions.

“When used correctly it is safe.

“The law should be repealed and the government and Home Secretary need to clear the air and stop lying about cannabis.

“I will be lobbying the government on this so until they repeal this law.

“I will have to put the cannabis social club on the back burner for now.”
