UK: Three arrests as '8,000' attend rainy Hyde Park cannabis protest

THREE people were arrested in Hyde Park on Sunday, as hundreds of cannabis smokers came out to celebrate “420”, a day that has long been linked to weed smoking.

Supporters of the annual drug protest gathered near Speakers’ Corner in the pouring rain on Easter Sunday, despite deterrents such as “cannabis surrender bins” and police signs which stated: “Cannabis smoking is illegal.”

The arrests included two for possession of class B drugs and one for suspicion of possession and intent to supply class A and B narcotics, police said.

A Met police spokesman said: “Anyone seen by officers openly smoking cannabis in Hyde Park or elsewhere in Westminster will be dealt with either by means of a cannabis warning or an arrest.”

The rally was organised by National Organisation for the Reform of Cannabis Laws (NORML UK) which campaigns for a change in rules surrounding medicinal and recreational cannabis use.

Stuart Harper from NORML UK said: “It was a great turnout, with around 8,000 people attending throughout the day. We got lots of donations and lots of new sign-ups to our group. The police were not overly aggressive, a few came round and asked people to put their joints in a special bin.”

Another protester said: “I use cannabis to stop me having seizures. I found the event to be very peaceful and relaxed with many friendly people from all walks of life. The police stance was a little over the top, targeting people, mostly for the press to get photo opportunities. I fully enjoyed the day, the only downside was the way the police abused our true rights to protest.”
