UK: Surrey Cannabis Club hold 'Protestival' picnic
Essential Surrey Monday 01 Sep 2014 The ‘Protestival’ was intended to provide an open forum to raise local awareness on the positive uses of cannabis, and the campaign for its legislation. Throughout the day, around 50 people attended the picnic, which Chairman of the Surrey Cannabis Club Alan Pavia described as a ‘big success.’ ‘We wanted to highlight the issues surrounding cannabis being illegal’ Pavia told Essential Surrey. ‘Prohibtion only creates a black market, where control of the drug falls into criminal hands. We propose monitored collectives, which would mean allowing individuals to grow cannabis safely and legally locally, in accordance with the Spain model. ‘Across Surrey, this could take place across the different boroughs, with each collective being overseen by three or more people.’ Response to the picnic was, on the whole, very positive, said Pavia. ‘Obviously there were a few people with attitude who didn’t want to talk to us, but most people were very open, and a lot of people would like to see legalisation.’ Pavia, who has used Cannabis both recreationally and as a prophylactic medication for 20 years, believes it is hypocritical to allow people to drink alcohol, but not to smoke cannabis. 'When I’m stressed, Cannabis is a fabulous substance to use. Why should we deny someone Cannabis, but not alcohol and nicotine?' he said. 'Medicinally, Cannabis can be used to treat someone who would otherwise have to endure great physical pain.
