UK: Organisers Say (Southsea) Cannabis Picnic Got People Talking

Campaigners who want to see cannabis legalised held an awareness picnic in Southsea on Saturday.

The event organised by the Hampshire Cannabis Community was to highlight the benefits of using cannabis for medical reasons, particularly cannabis oil.

Simon Dignam, a spokesperson for the group said that around 100 people attended during the day. He added, "It was a great success. It's been in the media, got a debate going and got people thinking about it. If people have gone on and googled it, then that's what I wanted - to get information out there."

Keiron Reeves travelled from Worthing to attend and said that he had been using cannabis oil to treat his epilepsy. Diagnosed with "petit mal" at the age of four, Keiron's attacks worsened as he got older meaning that he was excluded from a lot of activities as a child. He said, "Despite being heavilly medicated, epilepsy played a big part in my childhood as I couldn't join in and felt like an outcast really. When I found out about cannabis, it controlled a massive problem in my life so simply."

Keiron said that since using the cannabis oil, his attacks have significantly reduced and he has only had one in the last twelve months compared to one every fortnight previously. He added, "Every day is a success but I'm fighting for the children who have 300 seizures a day and aren't fit enough to campaign.

"There are real life success stories and the fact that we are criminalised is weird because nobody is profiting from this, we're just trying to live a better way of life."

Dr Janet Maxwell, Portsmouth City Council's director of public health said: "A range of research exists into the use of cannabis for medical purposes but currently there are no clear conclusions that any benefits outweigh the known risks.

"Whilst I support further medical research into this area, I would remind people that using cannabis remains illegal and has very real health risks including triggering long-term mental health problems."
