UK: Eight held after dope demo in Glasgow city centre

ONLY 250 people turned up yesterday to a pro-cannabis rally in Glasgow city centre.

Organisers had hoped to have 4,000 in George Square.

Many of those taking part lit up but police took a measured approach and there were eight arrests.

Among those attending was Paul Birch, the millionaire who co-founded internet site Bebo, who has launched the Cannabis Is Safer Than Alcohol (CISTA) party.

He said: “The movement to legalise cannabis is growing worldwide and, here in the UK, more people support it. The only thing standing in the way of change are the politicians who never handle social issues well.”

Linda Hendry, 65, of Edinburgh, said: “I’ve been campaigning for the legalisation of cannabis since 1979. There are, without doubt, medical benefits and people should be allowed to grow two or three plants for medicinal purposes.”

However, Christine Duncan, of Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs, said: “Any glamorising of substance misuse cannot be supported as we are all too aware of the impact on families.

"The more young people see an illegal behaviour publicly exhibited, the more difficult it will become to educate them on what is an illegal substance.”

Scottish Tory John Lamont said: “It’s not a good look for Scotland’s largest city to have such an irresponsible rally in its heart.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Six men aged 22, 24, 24, 25, 26, 28, are subject of reports to the Procurator Fiscal in connection with alleged drug offences.

“A man aged 35 was arrested with an alleged breach of the peace and a further man, 24, was arrested for alleged breach of bail.”
