Spain: Judges take action on Spain’s cannabis clubs

Spain’s Supreme Court has dealt a hard blow to cannabis clubs. These establishments, which have grown in number throughout Spain in the past 15 years, are where members gather to smoke, grow or purchase marijuana. The judges have criticised a club in Bilbao for “crimes against public health”, because it “exceeds” the philosophy of personal consumption, allowed by Spanish law. This is the first time that the high court has ruled on a marijuana club. Many experts believe the ruling issued yesterday is meant to draw a line. Prosecutors have been asking parliament for some time to clarify rules on the organisation of cannabis clubs.
