ANGELA EAGLE, MP, (Wallasey)
CANNABIS PROHIBITIONIST
Thank you for your recent letter on the question of the legalisation of Cannabis. I am sorry for the slight delay in replying but your letter arrived whilst I was away.
Whilst there are some scientific views to the contrary, the Government's scientific advisors maintain that the majority of the scientific evidence is quite clear about the harmful effects of cannabis, both short term and long term. Therefore, it would be irresponsible for any government not to take preventive and enforcement action in relation to cannabis.
I have always maintained that if there are medically useful compounds in cannabis, it should be open for these to be extracted and the extracts approved for medical use in the same way as any other compounds. I believe that such work is now taking place in a number of laboratories.
With kind regards
