Carl Wagner is used to hitting the headlines.

Last year, the city's most high-profile cannabis campaigner was given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay £100 in court costs after being arrested for growing four cannabis plants in his home.

The case provided the perfect platform for the indoor market stallholder to promote his views on cannabis legislation.

Now he's at it again - promoting his cause rather than getting into trouble with the law.

Having attracted nearly 500 votes in the last General Election, he's standing again in Hull North for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance.

He's also making local history by standing as a candidate in Hull East as well.

"Someone offered me £400 to stand against John Prescott. It was an offer I couldn't refuse," he explained.

Mr Wagner's double assault on Westminster is unlikely to succeed and he seems typically relaxed about the prospects of winning both seats.

He said: "Can I be an MP in two different seats? Legally, it is possible but I will cross that bridge if I come to it."

Meanwhile, Greenpeace's occupation of John Prescott's roof yesterday morning prompted Liberal Democrat challenger Andy Sloan to get on his bike to the house in east Hull.

He said: "I went there to see what was going on and with all the media there I was quite keen to promote our policies on the environment.

"Unfortunately, everyone seemed to be more interested in what was happening on Mr Prescott's roof."
