Dear Human Rights Activists,

The following articles concerning the July 31 decision as covered in the UPI news CANADIAN COURT STRIKES DOWN MARIJUANA LAW, are very relevant to the important debate surrounding medical marijuana policy in the United States - as this issue is now headed to the U.S. Supreme Court after another historic ruling by Federal Judge Breyer to allow the reopening of cannabis clubs for those with serious illnesses on July 17, 2000.

There seems to have been almost no news coverage of this important ruling in the U.S. media so far. Initially, there was one very short article on Aug. 1 in the Blade from Toledo, Ohio. Later, one paragraph in an article entitled "Civil Liberation" was published in the Honolulu Weekly.

HONOLULU WEEKLY August 9-15, 2000, Civil Liberation By Bob Stauffer

On the tail end of a fairly uneventful summer for Hawai'i come two glimmers of sunshine. On July 31 the appeals court for Ontario, the major province of Canada, ruled that marijuana laws there should not apply to a patient using the drug for medicinal purposes. In doing so, the court referred to Hawaii's recently enacted medical-marijuana law, which is the first in the nation approved by a state Legislature. The Ontario court went so far as to quote the entire Hawaii's law as an appendix to its decision.

I hope the following list of 92 different articles concerning this historic Canadian decision - adds to the important discussions going on in Canada and the United States (and many other countries) about the future direction of medical marijuana policy, as well as general marijuana policy:
