UK: Trader to prove there's no smoke without fibre Rebecca Green Newquay Voice Newspaper Wednesday 23 Mar 2005 A NEWQUAY businessman is turning over a new leaf with a business venture, which he claims is the first of its kind in the county. Jess Parkin will open Hempire, Newquay=92s first specialist hemp shop, in time for Easter and is expecting the new store to spark some controversy. "Most people are only aware of cannabis as a by-product of the hemp plant," said Jess, " but the possibilities for hemp are immense and man has been using it to make an astounding range of materials for thousands of years." To prevent any misconceptions Jess will be distributing leaflets to inform people about the new shop in Fore Street, which is a realisation of his ambition to bring hemp in all its diversity to Newquay. "The shop will be the first 100 per cent hemp shop in Newquay and the South West - it will be unique," said Jess, who also runs Johnny's Tobacconist. Hempire will stock several signature ranges of hemp fibre clothing in a range of contemporary styles and colours, along with limited edition Hempire tshirts. Hemp-based cosmetics, skincare products, accessories and gifts will complete the range. A local seamstress will also work alongside the venture making garments to order for customers from a range of hemp fabric in store. It has taken Jess over three years to source the contacts and goods for the shop, which he says means more to him than a business venture. "All Hempire's products are made and sourced to support international fair trade and can be traced back to the farms where the hemp is organically produced," he said. "Hempire will bring high quality, bright, fun and contemporary clothing to Newquay whilst enlightening those who see hemp as an evil weed. Using hemp in our daily lives contributes so much to sustainability and protecting the environment - I'd invite everyone to pop into Hempire and find out how." According to Jess, there is evidence that hemp products have been used as far back as 8,000 BC and even by Levi Strauss to make the world's first pair of jeans. He adds that today hemp fabric is used for its warmth, softness and durability.
