UK: Cannabis downgrade status could be reversed
Edinburgh Evening News
Saturday 24 Sep 2005 THE panel advising the Government on drugs meets today to discuss whether the downgrading of cannabis should be reversed. Home Secretary Charles Clarke asked the independent advisers to reassess the dangers in March, highlighting recent studies associating its use with "psychotic symptoms". He asked for particular guidance on Dutch plans to introduce a higher classification for more potent types of dope, known as skunk. Ex-home secretary David Blunkett downgraded the drug from Class B to Class C - placing it alongside steroids - in January last year. This made most cannabis possession cases a non-arrestable offence. Yesterday, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs heard evidence from cannabis users and charities. Members begin deliberations today and are expected to report to ministers by the end of the year.
