UK: 'Pot' plants stolen from castle
BBC Online
Tuesday 04 Oct 2005 Thieves have stolen cannabis plants in a raid at a specially-licensed poison garden at a top visitor attraction. The Duchess of Northumberland's controversial garden opened in February at Alnwick Castle, featuring opium poppies, magic mushrooms and coca. It is an attempt to open up debate about drugs and the harm they can do. The six cannabis plants and electrical growing equipment were stolen during the raid between the evening of 30 September and the following morning. The thieves smashed windows in a greenhouse where the cannabis plants were being protected from the cooler weather. Security review The Home Office granted the Alnwick Garden Trust permission to grow the plants late last year and more than 50 dangerous plants are included in the collection. Members of the public are escorted around the walled garden by marshals. Almost 124,000 people have been to see the open-air poison garden which is next to the spectacular Alnwick Castle - backdrop to some of the Harry Potter movies. The gardens management has now removed all remaining cannabis plants and will review its security. Northumbria Police is investigating the burglary and has appealed for witnesses.
