UK: Jail for drugs conspiracy officer
BBC News
Tuesday 15 Nov 2005 A prison officer has been told he faces jail after he was found guilty of conspiring to supply drugs to a career criminal with links to the Kray twins. Allan Ellis, 50, of Milton Keynes, who for 11 years worked at HMP Bullingdon near Bicester, was convicted of conspiracy to supply cannabis. Oxford Crown Court heard how he tried to smuggle drugs into the jail for inmate Nicholas Lambrianou, 60. Lambrianou is the brother of Reggie and Ronnie Kray's henchman Tony Lambrianou. On Monday, judge Julian Hall warned Ellis that he would be jailed, but released him on bail for three weeks to let him organise care for his children. The judge told the divorced father-of-two: "You will be going to prison but in mercy to your children whose future will need organising I will adjourn sentence until 5 December." Car park meet The trial heard that Ellis struck up a rapport with Lambrianou, who was serving time for drugs offences, and escorted him on a visit to his brother's grave in March. Lambrianou, who worked as a cleaner on the wing Ellis guarded, later approached Ellis saying his son wanted to express his thanks in person. The court heard how Lambrianou's son, also called Nicholas, met Ellis in the car park of Bicester North Station on 15 May. He handed over a magazine to Ellis, who was sitting in his car, and asked him to give it to his jailed father. Unbeknown to them, police, who had been monitoring Lambrianou's calls to his son, were watching the meeting covertly and arrested the pair. An ounce of cannabis resin and £50 in cash was found in the rolled-up magazine. Lambrianou Snr and his son both pleaded guilty to their part in the conspiracy and were jailed for 21 and 11 months respectively. But Lambrianou Snr, who clocked up 81 criminal convictions, for rape, blackmail and robbery between 1963 and 2004, died 10 days ago.
