UK: Campaign targets drivers under the influence
Andrew Robinson The Yorkshire Post
Monday 28 Nov 2005 PEOPLE who drive under the influence of drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and Ecstasy are the focus of a campaign backed by a top Yorkshire policeman. South Yorkshire chief constable Meredydd Hughes, the new head of roads policing for the Association of Chief Police Officers, has launched a publicity campaign in Leeds. The launch follows increasing evidence that suggests drug-driving is as prevalent as drink-driving among young motorists. Mr Hughes said: "The true extent of drug-driving remains hidden yet we increasingly know that such behaviour leads to casualties on the roads. As part of our national commitment to saving lives, the police service is determined to find the right tools to tackle the problem through enforcement and education." The campaign has already proved successful in the North-East where it has been running for the past two years. The Yorkshire-wide campaign will involve radio advertisements and posters on buses and in clubs and pubs.
