UK: Police to target cannabis growers

Glasgow Evening Times

Wednesday 30 Nov 2005

---
POLICE in Glasgow today vowed to get tough with people caught growing
their own cannabis plants.

The crackdown follows a shock rise in cannabis cultivation since the
drug was reclassified last year.

Detective Sergeant Kenny Simpson said: "The number of people growing
cannabis in the domestic environment or on a larger scale is increasing.

"If an officer finds someone in possession of cannabis they are
duty-bound to report the circumstances to the procurator-fiscal.

"We are also warning shopkeepers of the consequences of knowingly
selling drugs paraphernalia."

Eight-five people were reported to the procurator-fiscal for allegedly
growing the drug in 2004-2005 compared to 52 in 2001-2002.
