UK: Cannabis drivers dice with death
Nigel Hawkes The Times
Friday 02 Dec 2005 Driving under the influence of cannabis almost doubles the risk of a fatal road crash, according to a study in France. A team from the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research examined data on 10,748 drivers who were in fatal crashes between October 2001 and September 2003. A total of 681 drivers tested positive for cannabis (7 per cent) and 2,096 for alcohol (21.4 per cent), including 285 for both (2.9 per cent). They were compared with a control group. The greater the concentration of cannabis in the blood, the greater the risk of a fatal accident. At low levels the risk doubled, and at higher levels it tripled. In spite of this, alcohol remains a greater cause of fatal accidents in France, the authors say in BMJ Online First. Drink-driving accounted for 29 per cent of fatal accidents, compared with 2.5 per cent for cannabis, although the proportions of drink-drivers and cannabis users were similar.
