UK: Woman in cannabis trial died
Paul Stokes The Telegraph
Tuesday 13 Dec 2005 A diabetic woman developed severe mental health problems and died five months after taking part in trials of a cannabis-based treatment. Rene Anderson, 69, became "confused and intoxicated" three days after starting to take the drug Sativex, an inquest in Sheffield heard yesterday. She was admitted to hospital when her mental state deteriorated. Mrs Anderson, a retired supermarket supervisor, later suffered a series of physical problems, including pneumonia, and died in March last year from acute kidney failure. Mrs Anderson had been taking part in a trial supervised by Dr Solomon Tesfae, a diabetes expert, who wanted to investigate whether cannabis could provide useful relief from the severe pain experienced by diabetic neuropathy sufferers. The hearing continues.
