UK: Roadside drug checks next year
The Sunday Times
Sunday 18 Dec 2005 Roadside tests to catch motorists who drive while high on drugs will be introduced next year. Police currently rely on "fitness" tests to check reaction times and co-ordination if they suspect a driver has been taking drugs, but new equipment will use samples of saliva or sweat to detect in minutes whether a driver has consumed drugs including cannabis, cocaine, heroin and amphetamines. A pilot scheme to test the hand-held equipment will begin early next year in Cleveland. "Up until now it's been difficult for us to do enough about it. We need this new tool. Once we've proved it works we plan to move quickly to enable it to be used more widely," said Adam Briggs, assistant chief constable of Cleveland police.
