UK: Drugs bust at troops' HQ
The Sun
Wednesday 21 Dec 2005 EIGHT more soldiers face the boot for drugs from a scandal-hit Army regiment, it emerged last night. The young privates from the Green Howards were caught in a random swoop less than three months after 14 other squaddies tested positive for narcotics. And another soldier was arrested after a massive stash of ecstasy pills was found hidden in a car on the unit’s base. In this week’s raid three squaddies were caught with cocaine in their systems, three with ecstasy, one with both, and one with cannabis. In October another Green Howards member was arrested over the discovery of 40 bags of cocaine and 150 ecstasy pills. With up to 24 soldiers now on charges and facing the sack, the 317-year-old regiment has lost almost a whole platoon to drug abuse. A source said: “Good soldiers who want to stay in are hard enough to find as it is these days and this has left a gaping hole in the battalion. “It’s obvious the CO has a real problem on his hands with so many blokes as high as kites.” The highy-respected infantry regiment, based at Beachley Barracks near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, recently returned from a successful six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. Confirming the busts, an MoD spokesman said: “Drugs misuse is incompatible with life in the Armed Forces.” The Green Howards, who have a long affiliation with Yorkshire, have served with distinction in many campaigns and won 18 VCs including one on D-Day. http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005590160,00.html
