WALES: Pro-cannabis candidate to stand
Daily Post, South Wales
Thursday 07 Apr 2005 A Pro-cannabis candidate is to stand in Swansea West, it has emerged. The constituency has been targeted by a campaigning group which wants to see cannabis legalised. It is also planning to mount a campaign in Neath and Carmarthen West. Another candidate, Sid Whitworth, from Penygroes, is to fight the Ceredigion constituency. He is one of 21 candidates across the UK standing for the Legalise Cannabis Alliance. Divorced father-of-one Mr Whitworth, aged 47, of Maesglas, claimed the police and judiciary "wasted millions'' of pounds fighting court cases involving possession of cannabis when they could plough these resources into what he considers more serious crimes. Former journalist Mr Whitworth said: "I am standing because this is something I feel strongly about. "Any harm that cannabis has caused people is dwarfed to a huge extent by other people who are under the influence of alcohol. "Why tie up all this time and money with the police and the judiciary system with cannabis when the police should be out catching real criminals?" Legalise Cannabis Alliance press officer and executive committee member Don Barnard said: "I think when people realise what we have got to say, they will realise how stupid the law is."
