Cannabis Party Challenge Charles Clarke to be brave on cannabis policy

The Legalise Cannabis Alliance (LCA) a UK political party, calls upon the Home Secretary Charles Clarke to "Be brave and take the bull by the horns" over the cannabis issue.

Alun Buffry, the party's nominating officer who stood against Charles Clarke in the 2001 General Election said: "Now that the Government's Advisory Council on Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) has recommended that cannabis stay in class C, it's time for Mr Clarke to take a serious look at the options, and not allow himself to be unduly influenced by either political manipulation or scare mongering about epidemics of psychosis amongst our youth.

"Members of the ACDM have said: "At worst, the risk to an individual of developing a schizophrenic form illness as a result of using cannabis is very small.

"It must now be time to ask what good punishing cannabis users, whether they benefit or suffer, unless they do harm to others. That has always been the Challenge of the LCA to the Government - justify the punishment or bring cannabis use within the law. (1)

"This would be a brave step indeed and this was recognised in 2002 when another panel of experts, The Home Affairs Committee, looked into Government drugs policy and wrote: With a handful of brave exceptions ... drugs policy is an area where British politicians have feared to tread".

Don Barnard. who stood against Charles Clarke in the 2005 General Election said: "Consensus is that there is a plausible link between cannabis use and mental health problems in some."... Now can we get on with what needs doing to protect those few"

"Charles Clarke should use the opportunity to acknowledge prohibition
(under the misuse of drugs act 1971) has miserably failed to achieve all its objectives. And be brave enough to accept there might be a better way to deal with the risks and presence of cannabis in the 21st Century.

"But, I will not hold my breath" he said.
