Australia: Call to end marijuana leniency

Sunday 22 Jan 2006 THE Federal Government has urged every state and territory government to get tough on cannabis in a bid to reduce mental health problems. Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Christopher Pyne yesterday called for cannabis use and possession to be recriminalised. Cannabis possession is criminal in all states but with varying leniency. In Victoria, the maximum penalty for cannabis use or possession is a $500 fine. First or second-time offenders with up to 50g may be cautioned. Mr Pyne said it was time to make cannabis possession criminal no matter how small the amount. "We must do more to tackle the perception that cannabis is a harmless drug," he said.
