Indonesia: Death penalty demanded for one of Bali 9
Radio News Zealand
Wednesday 25 Jan 2006 Indonesian prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for an Australian accused of leading a plot to smuggle drugs from the resort island of Bali. Prosecutors accused Myuran Sukumaran of being "the head of an international drug smuggling syndicate". Along with eight compatriots, he is accused of trying to carry 8.2kg of heroin out of Bali. Dubbed the "Bali nine" by Australian media, the eight men and one woman were arrested in April 2005. Some were detained at Bali's airport with heroin strapped to their bodies, while others were arrested in a nearby hotel room. Earlier this week, Indonesian prosecutors asked for a sentence of life in prison for two of the accused. Several foreigners have been sentenced to death for serious drugs offences in Indonesia in recent years. Last year, Schapelle Corby was found guilty of smuggling marijuana into Bali and sentenced to 20 years in jail last May. She was caught in October 2004 carrying 4.1kg of cannabis in a bodyboard bag. http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/bulletins/radionz/200601250559/21d65c6e
