UK: Prisoner died after he swallowed cannabis
Milton Keynes Today
Tuesday 24 Jan 2006 A WOODHILL prisoner who died in hospital after suffering from stomach pains for days had swallowed three bags of cannabis to be passed to others in the jail, an inquest has heard. Lee Daniels, of Daventry, called prison officers to his cell at about 9.15am on February 2, 2004 – he was in so much pain he had difficulty talking and supporting his own weight. The 43-year-old was taken to the prison's health care wing and then on to A&E at Milton Keynes General Hospital at about 10am. He was about to go into theatre when he started vomiting and went into arrest – resuscitation was attempted but failed. Death was confirmed at 2.30pm. The inquest at the Civic Offices yesterday heard that Daniels, who had been on remand for drugs charges since July the previous year, had been complaining of pains, constipation and vomiting since January 26. After his death the prison received intelligence that he had swallowed three packets of the cannabis and had not passed them for two weeks. Det Sgt Christopher Jackson told the hearing he had seen a file on Daniels during his investigation into the death. "There were intelligence reports that expressed the opinion that he might well have been involved in supplying drugs to inmates, and that he may well have been getting them into prison by way of swallowing them," he said. During the hearing, David Maxwell-Scott, representing the Prison Service, read out a transcript of a recorded telephone conversation between Daniels and a female friend known only as 'A' on January 27. "You will have to make those things smaller," he told 'A' after complaining he felt unwell. 'A', who visited Daniels on January 20 and 21, replied: "All that sh*t inside you won't do you any good." The inquest continues. http://www.miltonkeynestoday.co.uk/ViewArticle2.aspx?SectionID=415&ArticleID=1324396
