UK: Police seize drug in raid on MS woman

Friday 27 Aug 1999 Cannabis: Ex-mayor Paisley's secretary admits: I use it to ease the pain By Staff Reporter The secretary of Carlisle drug campaigner Colin Paisley had her Cumbrian home raided by the drugs squad officers yesterday afternoon. Thirty-five-year-old Lezley Gibson is to be interviewed on Tuesday morning after a raid at her Alston home yesterday. Lezley, who has suffered from multiple sclerosis for the past 15 years, has made no secret of the fact that she uses cannabis to alleviate her suffering. She believes the drug has made a difference to her health, helping prevent paralysis, blindness and loss of speech. Her home was raided by police yesterday afternoon and eight grams of the drug seized. Lezley works for Mr Paisley, 62, at his Carlisle office. The former city mayor is to stand as an MP in the Wigan by-election later this year under the banner of the Legalise Cannabis Alliance. Mr Paisley, himself an ex-heroin addict, is also the Liberal Party's national spokesman for drugs and northern co-ordinator for Transform - the campaign for effective drugs policies. Lezley said she had been half-expecting the raid after locals told her officers had been spotted in the area over the past few days. She told the News & Star last night: "I am very angry. "I've been using cannabis for 13 years, and this has happened before, but I resent being treated like a criminal. They went through all my stuff and it's an invasion. "I don't try to hide what I do and everyone around here is very sympathetic. They know why I use it." Just last month Lezley said she felt easier about using cannabis following the acquital of Colin Davies in Stockport. He was found not guilty of supplying drugs after the court heard he sold to MS sufferers. Lezley said: "I think it's to do with where we live. Up here, people will hang, draw and quarter you for this." Mr Paisley said he would "support Lezley to the end." He intends to accompany her to Carlisle police station on Tuesday, he added. "She uses cannabis to ease her MS and if you were to see her you wouldn't know there was anything wrong with her.
