UK: Vote for me, says cannabis candidate

Thursday 20 Apr 2000 A FORMER Nelson man who promotes cannabis is running for election at his new home town of Peterborough. Father-of-two Marcus Davies (31) is an epileptic who used to suffer three convulsions every day. He has been using cannabis since a doctor in the North recommended it more than a decade ago, and has had only three convulsions since. The former Fisher-More High School student said: "Medication took away my life, it slowed me down to the point where I was sitting in a chair all day, every day slobbering out of the corner of my mouth, unable to even get up to use the toilet. "Taking cannabis changed that." Mr Davies says it is wrong to brand cannabis an illicit drug, and said he would not stop his sons, aged nine and 12, from smoking it when they are older. He decided to run for local election after his mother, Margaret, died of cancer in March. He said: "My mother had a lot of problems with her medication and her problem was greatly relieved by cannabis. She was anti-drugs all her life but found herself in a position where she needed help, but the help was not forthcoming. "My mother supported me 100%, as does my wife Tara." Mr Davies's bid to be the next councillor in the city's East Ward, representing the Legalise Cannabis Alliance, coincides with a major independent report calling for reduced penalties for people caught with cannabis. But Mr Davies's platform has been attacked by other parties and his landlord gave him two months' notice to quit the three-bedroom house he has been renting for two years, only nine days after he made his views on cannabis public. Despite the landlord's property agent, Dakings, saying the decision had nothing to do with Mr Davies's campaign, the candidate said it is too much of a coincidence. He said: "I have also received a lot of support for my actions. Once the initial shock horror effect has worn off, and people here my full story, a lot of people understand and change their minds. I will be fighting to legalise cannabis for both recreational and medicinal use." The city council elections will take place on May 4th.
