Ireland: Cannabis caution sends wrong signal
Sean McKiernan (Jnr) Irish Examiner
Monday 30 Jan 2006 I MUST criticise the suggestion by the DPP to gardaĆ, backed by Justice Minister Michael McDowell, that they should no longer prosecute those found in possession of cannabis for personal use, but instead be cautioned. This sends out the wrong signal. It shows more than ever the need for a moral renewal in Government and society. Illegal drug use is wrong, and it can lead to more serious drug use, crime and mental illness, even suicide. The minister has outlined the web of death and mayhem that cannabis can be at the centre of. He should not sanction a slippery slope to casual use. Those who use drugs, as well as those who perpetrate acts of anti-social behaviour upon their communities, should compensate those same communities through programmes of restorative justice. Many local groups need help. Perhaps in doing such work, those who use and abuse drugs and alcohol will come to appreciate there is a communal duty to humanity.
