Monday 09 Oct 2000 Change the drug policy LABOUR says: "the Tories are all over the place on drugs" - not literally - I hope! (Tories launch hard line on drugs, October 3) is a cheek, have they looked at their own crazy policy lately!!! Ann is correct; drugs are easily available today, We do have uncontrollable cannabis use amongst young and old people alike, escalating prison populations, very high death rates due to drug abuse not to mention violating civil liberties. Sadly, rather than learning from decades long expensive, irresponsible, misguided and unsuccessful fight against some drugs (which brought this about), the Tories and Labour are proposing more of the same. Our drug policy must begin to take account of reality and address concrete problems The goal should be harm reduction. This means the adoption of strategies that reduce the problems associated with drug use and control (needle exchange and legalisation of cannabis) can be sited as an example. We need to think the unthinkable. Legalise cannabis and decriminalise all other drugs - treat drug misuse as a health problem, not as a criminal justice one. Ann, like most politicians from all main stream parties, beyond calling for more police and more repression - has not got a clue about drugs. Don Barnard Legalise Cannabis Alliance
