Letter: CANNABIS PARTY'S POPULAR SUPPORT

Derek Williams

Evening News, Norwich

Saturday 10 May 1997

---
As election agent for Howard Marks and the Legalise Cannabis party I
would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone involved for their
help and hard work during the recent election campaign. I would also
like to make a short comment on the result we achieved.

Those of us who oppose the criminalisation of cannabis can now point to
the support of over 1,200 adults in Norwich, approximately 1.3% of the
electorate. These are people who agree with the call to legalise the use
of cannabis to such an extent that they place it above all other issues
which were raised at the election.

Now clearly far more people would support our cause if they were allowed
to express their views without having to choose between legalising
Cannabis and, for example, protecting the NHS or even just getting rid
of the Tories.

Also, it has to be pointed out that we achieved that result with a
shoestring budget which just about stretched to one mail-shot and a few
photocopied posters.

I hope this demonstration of popular support for legalisation will help
bring closer the day when careers are no longer wrecked and people are
no longer exposed to unnecessary dangers caused by a law which should
have been scrapped years ago.

Yours sincerely Derek Williams
Election agent for Howard Marks
Legalise Cannabis Party
